Freedom House Labelled “Undesirable” in Russia

The General Prosecutor's Office has declared Freedom House, an international human rights organisation, "undesirable" in Russia. The Russian prosecutor's office claims that the main goal of Freedom House's activities is to support the "dominant" role of the United States in world politics. In Russia, it is believed that FH has been promoting the interests of "hostile states" since Russia's attack on Ukraine, discrediting the Russian army, and advocating for sanctions against Russia.

"The organisation provides information, financial, legal, and other support to Russian opposition structures, pro-Western and LGBT activists, communities defending their interests, as well as individuals convicted of terrorist crimes," the Russian Prosecutor General's Office stated.

The list of "undesirable organisations" has existed in Russia since 2015 and includes 160 organisations. Cooperation with them entails administrative and criminal consequences under Russian legislation.
