Russian lawyer Ilya Novikov is now facing a criminal case for state treason in Russia

A criminal case is initiated against the lawyer in Russia. The Russian special service suspects him of committing treason by switching to the enemy's side. Under Article 275 of the Russian Criminal Code, this offense carries a penalty of imprisonment, including a possible life sentence.

The Federal Security Service (FSB) has released a statement saying, "It has been established that Novikov I.S. voluntarily left the territory of Russia, joined the Territorial Defense Forces of Ukraine and is currently participating in their activities. This includes undergoing military training, engaging in combat operations, and conducting propaganda work. A criminal case has been opened against him under Article 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (high treason in the form of switching to the enemy's side)." The investigation is ongoing.

Ilya Novikov's reaction to the case can be seen at the link, but cannot be quoted, since it contains strong language.

On November 5, 2022, the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation included Novikov in the register of individuals performing the functions of a foreign agent. In June of this year, the Moscow Bar Association revoked his status as a lawyer after considering a submission from the Ministry of Justice. The submission cited Novikov's systematic posting of information and statements that were deemed incompatible with the status of a lawyer of the Russian Federation. These posts were seen as defaming his honor and dignity and undermining the authority of the institution of advocacy.

Previously, Novikov had defended captured Ukrainian pilot Nadezhda Savchenko and filmmaker Oleg Sentsov in Russia. He has been residing in Kiev since 2021, where he defended former President Petro Poroshenko in court. Last December, the Russian Interior Ministry placed him on a wanted list, although the article did not disclose the specific details of the charges. In Kiev, he joined the territorial defense forces.
