On May 7, 2024, the Qualification Commission on Advocacy in the Republic of Belarus conducted another certification of attorneys from the Gomel Regional Bar Association (A. Laptev, V. Nikitenko, A. Plyago) and the Minsk City Bar Association (I. Bartosh).
The following decisions were made:
V. Nikitenko and A. Plyago were found to comply with the requirements of the legislation, while I. Bartosh and A. Laptev were deemed unable to fulfill their professional duties as attorneys.
It is noteworthy that Anatoly Laptev published on April 17 an article titled "Accountability for Terrorism," in which he claimed that amendments to the criminal legislation providing for the death penalty for treason against the state (a provision used for the persecution of citizens for political reasons) are aimed at "increasing the effectiveness of maintaining peace and security for humanity, protecting public and state interests, the constitutional system of the Republic of Belarus, and the established rule of law from criminal extremist acts, preventing crimes, and educating citizens in compliance with the legislation of the Republic of Belarus".
The Qualification Commission decided as well on revocation of the license of G. Drozdov., who previously practiced law as part of Legal Advice Office No. 1 in Vitebsk. The ground for this decision was Drozdov's exclusion from the Vitebsk Regional Bar Association "for committing an offense incompatible with the status of an attorney."
